Help for ill elephant

BURI RAM: Wildlife officials are stepping up preventive measures, including extending electric fencing and installing CCTV cameras, to keep a wild elephant from entering agricultural areas during the harvest season.

Sukhee Boonsang, director of the Wildlife Conservation Office, visited Dong Yai Wildlife Sanctuary in Buri Ram on Saturday to review efforts to look after the elephant, known as DY M 001, and reduce the risk of human-wildlife conflict.

He said a solar-powered electric fence would be extended by eight rai from its current six-rai enclosure, providing more shaded areas, natural food sources and space for the animal. Water ponds will also be cleared of weeds to improve water supplies.

Two CCTV cameras donated by a civic network will be installed to monitor wild elephants and ensure safety around the clock.
