Hello Kitty, the iconic Japanese girl-cat who celebrated her 40th birthday last year, will hit the big screen in 2019.

The film will be financed and produced by the new US subsidiary wing of Japanese company Sanrio, and is said to have a budget of around $200m.

Kitty White was born in the suburbs of London in 1974 after creator Yuko Shimizu, who worked for Sanrio, decided to capitalise on the vogueishness of foreign lands in Japan at the time.

The small white cat (height: five apples, weight: three apples) is said to be kind, keen on baking and collecting and a diligent pupil. She lives with her twin, Mimmy, plus assorted friendly relatives.

As well as lending her face to a myriad of products, Kitty has also been the star of several TV shows and numerous video games, as well as recording an album.

Other Sanrio properties apparently being considered for the big-screen treatment include My Melody and Little Twin Stars. They also owned rights to some Mr Men and Little Miss characters, which were acquired by Fox in January.
