In April 2025, Helix updated its entire product range, including its Midnight mattresses for side sleepers. If you're wondering how the entry-level Helix Midnight matches up to the premium Helix Midnight Luxe now, we'll be comparing their comfort and support, performance, and value for money here in this guide.
Helix features in our guide to the best mattresses of 2025, with the Helix Midnight Luxe crowned as our top choice for side sleepers — but don't count out the original Helix Midnight if you want a slightly softer mattress at a lower price. Both the Midnight and Midnight Luxe models allow for upgrades in cooling and lower back support as well.
Thanks to regular mattress sales, you'll always be able to save on whichever Midnight model you decide is the right fit for you — after you read our Helix Midnight vs Helix Midnight Luxe explainer, that is.
Helix Midnight vs Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress: Price & Trial
- Helix mattresses usually cut between 20 and 25% off MSRP
- On sale, the Midnight is $800 less than the Midnight Luxe in a queen
- Both mattresses come with a 100-night trial and lifetime warranty
An evergreen Helix mattress sale means you’ll never pay full MSRP for either of these mattresses, with the norm being 20-25% off. However, we regularly feature a semi-exclusive discount that knocks 27% off. Larger markdowns are reserved for major holidays and shopping events such as Black Friday.
After 25% off, a queen-size Helix Midnight Mattress goes for $999 (from $1,332), while a queen-size Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress goes for $1,799 (from $2,399). Both mattresses come with a 100-night trial, a limited lifetime warranty, and free shipping.
Time your purchase right and you could also score two free Dream pillows with the Helix Midnight, or a free bedding bundle with the Midnight Luxe, which comes with two Dream pillows, a sheet set, and a mattress protector.
Helix Midnight vs Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress: Materials & Design
- The 11.5" Helix Midnight has five internal layers
- The 13.5" Midnight Luxe also has five internal layers but adds a pillow top
- Both mattresses offer upgrades for cooling and back pain relief
As you’d imagine, there are similarities between the two mattresses when it comes to design, but the Helix Midnight Luxe is taller and firmer, for instance.
Inside the 11.5" Helix Midnight Mattress, you'll find a pair of gel memory foam comfort layers that add a balance of pressure relief and support, a transitional foam layer that gives the bed its medium firmness, up to 1,000 individually wrapped coils (reinforced length-wise for edge support), and a DuraDense foam base for stability.
There's now an updated BreatheKnit cover quilted with a layer of gel memory foam, giving the Midnight a slightly taller loft than before. You can also add a GlacioTex pillow-top for more contouring and increased cooling, as well as an ErgoAlign foam for extra lumbar support.

The 13.5" Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress now features a denser pillow top than before, plus 4lbs of titanium and graphite-infused memory foam that works in tandem with the gel memory foam layer to produce targeted pressure relief. The Helix Response Foam transition layer is firmer than what you'll find in the Core Collection Midnight for increased support.
The bed of up to 1,000 wrapped coils features reinforced springs along the entire perimeter and in the center — and for max support in the lower back area, you can add an ErgoAlign foam layer.
A Tencel cover comes standard, but you can upgrade to a GlacioTex cooling cover, with the option to add a layer of graphite ribbons that Helix claims can provide up to 12 hours of cooling and boost heat removal by 22%.
These are mattresses in a box, meaning they’ll arrive at your house compressed and rolled into a box for ease of transport. However, you can pay extra for white glove delivery, where available.
Helix Midnight vs Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress: Comfort & Support
- The Helix Midnight is softer than the Helix Midnight Luxe (albeit slightly)
- The Midnight Luxe is also supportive for back sleepers
- ErgoAlign upgrade is helpful for sleepers with back pain
The Helix Midnight is a fantastic choice for side sleepers and, in fact, until the Helix Midnight Luxe was released, it was our top choice for those who prefer that style of sleeping.
During our Helix Midnight mattress review, we rated the mattress at 6.5 out of 10 for firmness, which is slightly firmer than Helix’s rating of 5-6 out of 10. That remains the case with the updated Helix Midnight we tested hands-on.
The mattress offers plenty of cushioning support for side sleepers, with pressure points soothed around the shoulders, hips, and knees. Back sleepers should also find the mattress supportive, but it’s not firm enough for heavier sleepers or those who sleep on their front.
Motion isolation is also excellent, but the edge support is a little lacking. (It's improved on the updated Midnight, but still falls behind the Luxe.)

We rate the Helix Midnight Luxe the best mattress for side sleepers overall. It's a true medium mattress that's also supportive enough for back sleepers, as we discovered in our updated Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress review. Helix rates it at 5-6 out of 10, but our testers felt it slept on the firmer side of that, at 6 out of 10.
A significant point is that it's 2" taller than the Midnight, standing at 13.5" compared to the Midnight's 11.5". Since mattresses that are between 12" and 14" in height are considered best for side sleepers, the Luxe's height is an advantage.
Part of that taller profile is the plush pillow top, which (along with the responsive foam layer below) delivers outstanding cushioning, pressure relief, and contouring support for side sleepers. (The pillow top gives the bed a real luxury hotel-style feel.)
Beneath those foam comfort layers is a strip of reinforced central coils providing enhanced lumbar support — along with full-perimeter edge support, which allowed us to comfortably use every edge of the surface.
We consider the Midnight Luxe one of the best mattresses for back pain. While we didn't review the ErgoAlign upgrade in our full trial, one of our testers (who has mild scoliosis, experiences lower back pain, and prefers sleeping on her side) slept on it for four nights and found it helped her sleep on her back without discomfort.

Helix Midnight vs Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress: Temperature Control
- The Midnight Luxe performed better at temperature regulation
- You can upgrade to a GlacioTex cooling cover with either mattress
- The Midnight Luxe also features the option to add heat-wicking graphite ribbons
Based on our tests, the Helix Midnight Luxe is a better bet for hot sleepers than the Helix Midnight.
You can upgrade either mattress to include a GlacioTex cover, as seen on the best cooling mattresses — but the Midnight Luxe takes it a step further with the option to add graphite ribbons to draw away even more body heat. (We've yet to try this upgrade ourselves.)
Helix Midnight vs Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress: Which should you buy?
Buy the Helix Midnight if…
✅ You’re on a tighter budget: Although the Midnight is still a mid-range mattress, you'll save hundreds compared to going for the premium Midnight Luxe.
✅ You’re a strict side sleeper: The Helix Midnight is the softest mattress in the range, so we recommend it for lightweight to average-weight side sleepers who want loads of pressure relief.
✅ You share a bed: In fairness, both the Midnight and the Midnight Luxe handle motion transfer incredibly well, but if you don’t need the extra specs of the Luxe, the Midnight will capably isolate motion if you have a restless partner.
Buy the Helix Midnight Luxe if…
✅ You experience back pain: The Midnight Luxe is our top pick for side sleepers with back pain, with the enhanced lumbar support helping to keep the spine aligned and pressure points soothed. (The ErgoAlign upgrade is also helpful here.)
✅ You also like to sleep on your back: The dense pillow top gives the Midnight Luxe an extra layer of cushioning, softness, and sink-in support — but with a slightly firmer overall bed feel, it's able to accommodate most back sleepers in addition to side sleepers.
✅ You want better edge support: The superior edge support of the Luxe means you can spread out across the whole mattress and sit comfortably on the edges.
