Helicopters Edinburgh: Military choppers spotted above Meadows as police cordon off park

Three military helicopters were spotted circling above Edinburgh on Friday afternoon.

Residents spotted the RAF Puma choppers flying low above the city centre, particularly near Bruntsfield and the Meadows around 3.30pm.

Police in the city had earlier cordoned off a section of the Meadows amid an "RAF training exercise", with expectation that they'd be landing in the park, however it's unclear whether the cordon remains up.

Twitter user @DRZ073 posted two photographs, adding: "What's going on up there in skies over Edinburgh? 3 military helicopters sisterly circling the Meadows/ Bruntsfield area for the past ten minutes, flying quite low over Bruntsfield."

It is believed two of the helicopters may have landed in the Meadows, and one may be heading north towards Fife.

A spokesperson for the RAF said: "RAF Puma helicopters from RAF Benson have recently been operating in the Edinburgh area completing essential operational training.

"Our crews use a variety of Helicopter Landing Sites (HLS) such as the Edinburgh Meadows and training areas around the whole of the UK for training and vary their routes and locations to maximise training benefit and ensure that our crews continue to be ready for global operations."
