Helicopter rescue on Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh as injured walker hospitalised

A walker has been hospitalised after an emergency rescue operation on Arthur's Seat.

Coastguard helicopter, mountain rescue and ambulance crews raced to the Edinburgh tourist hotspot just after 10pm on Saturday.

The late-night walker suffered a lower leg injury.

Mountain Rescue officers said the casualty got into bother on 'complex ground' walking over 'rocky, single-track paths above and below them'.

A helicopter tried to get to the injured walker but failed due to dense fog in the area.

Soon after, ambulance crews were able to reach the casualty and he was taken to hospital.

The severity of the walker's injuries and his current medical condition was not disclosed.

Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue Team released a statement later than night.

It read: "Just after 10pm this evening we were called to assist the Scottish Ambulance Service evacuate an injured walker from Holyrood Park in Edinburgh.

"The walker had sustained a lower leg injury on complex ground with rocky single track paths above and below them.

"As well as Ambulance and MRT, HM Coastguard Rescue Helicopter R199 also attended but despite valiant efforts, they were beaten back by rolling banks of dense fog which were drifting in and out of the casualty site.

"Once it was established the helicopter could not assist, the casualty was evacuated by Scottish Ambulance SORT team in their Wolvarine vehicle for onward transport to hospital.

"Ten MRT were available for this one and were stood down at midnight.

"Best wishes to the casualty and fingers crossed for a speedy recovery."
