Helicopter pilot flew 80 miles round trip for roast beef sandwich in lockdown

A helicopter pilot is under investigation after allegedly flying an 80-mile round trip to pick up a roast beef sandwich during lockdown.

In a video posted online last week a man appeared to collect a sandwich from a helicopter outside a farm shop.

One local resident went on to slam the extraordinary food collection and told the BBC the trip was a 'flagrant abuse' of the restrictions under Covid lockdown rules.

Lancs Live reports that the unidentified pilot was seen to collect the sandwich from Chipping Farm Shop in the Ribble Valley.

He was apparently collecting a roast beef in a caramelised onion gravy sandwich.

One resident later said he had tracked the helicopter from City Airport in Salford to the shop using a flight radar website.

Greater Manchester Police went on to confirm they are looking into what happened while Ribble Valley Borough Council is also investigating, reports the BBC.

The video was posted to Instagram by the shop itself and shows a member of staff appearing to deliver the sandwich to the pilot.

The post included the caption: "When your customers are literally flying in to collect their favourite 'Roast Beef in Caramelised Onion Gravy Barms'.

One person responded that it was 'not the best marketing ploy during a pandemic' with many saying the idea had backfired.

Simon Hore, who represents Chipping on Ribble Valley Borough Council, told the BBC that the helicopter trip 'does seem to be a flagrant abuse of the restrictions on travel under the current lockdown rules'.

Lancashire Constabulary said that any complaints would be passed onto Greater Manchester Police.

Attempts were made to contact the business for comment with one member of staff saying on Saturday they were very busy.
