Helicopter crashes after taking off for sunset tour of Uluru

Three people are expected to be transferred to hospital, at least one with a suspected spinal injury.

Four people have been injured after a tourist helicopter crashed near Yulara, close to Uluru.

The NT Health Department said the pilot and three passengers were on board when the chopper went down at 6:30pm, about 1.5 kilometres west of the tourist hub, but are all in a stable condition.

The crash site was inaccessible by road so local medical staff assisted until the Royal Flying Doctor Service arrived.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service said the pilot and one passenger had suspected spinal injuries.

Another passenger sustained multiple fractures and chest injuries and the fourth was treated for minor injuries.

NT Police said the helicopter came down shortly after taking off for a sunset tour of Uluru and those involved would be transferred to Alice Springs.

"It's a remote area that's not easy to get to," the police spokeswoman said.

Police officers remained at the scene overnight and are investigating the incident.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has been notified of the incident, police said.
