Helicopter and search dogs drafted in to trace missing Scot last seen on mountain top

A missing hillwalker, last seen at the top of the mountain, has sparked a major search operation in the Highlands.

Stuart Baillie from Bo'ness, Falkirk set out to walk on a route to Aonach Beag and Aonach Mor from the Steall Falls car park in Glen Nevis on Monday.

The 60-year-old was last heard from at around 2.10pm that afternoon the summit of Aonach Beag, a mountain near Ben Nevis and Fort William.

Police released an image of Stuart Baillie in what is his usual hillwalking attire, and what he'd likely be wearing before going missing (HIGHLANDS AND ISLANDS POLICE DIVISION)

Having not returned as planned, he was reported missing at around 6.35pm that evening.

Lochaber, Glencoe and Police Scotland mountain rescue teams, dogs from Search and Rescue Dogs Association and a Coastguard helicopter have been drafted in to help trace Stuart.

He is described as white, five foot inches tall and with brown eyes.

Stuart wears glasses and has a mole on his right cheek.

Police say the climber is likely to be wearing a purple waterproof jacket, black waterproof bottoms and carrying a purple or blue rucksack.

Highlands and Island Police Division shared two images of Stuart; one of which shows him in his usual hiking gear.

Officers stressed that Stuart's planned route for Monday is popular with visitors to the area.

Anyone who thinks they saw Stuart, or who have information on his whereabouts, should come forward.

Sergeant Chris Hardwick said: “This is a popular walking route and I would urge anyone who has been in the area and believes they may have seen or spoken to Stuart to get in touch as soon as they can.

“Anyone with information can call 101, quoting reference 2718 of December 20.”
