Helicopter and fire crews rescue youths who fell down ditch in Midlothian

The Police Scotland helicopter was called out to help in a rescue operation after two young people fell down a ditch and became trapped in Midlothian.

The alarm was raised around 5pm on Monday after the pair got stuck in woods around Roslin Glen park.

Fire crews attended the scene and used rope rescue gear to reach a young man and woman.

Pictures released by the police helicopter unit showed rescuers attaching lines to reach the pair at the bottom of the steep incline.

The rescue took place near the bridge over the River North Esk to the south of Roslin.

Both youths were unharmed in the incident, which saw the helicopter hovering around the area for several hours.

A fire service spokeswoman said: "We extricated two casualties using rope rescue gear."
