Helicopter and armed police called to Byker after man 'seen with gun' near Shields Road

Armed police and a helicopter searched the streets of Byker for nearly an hour looking for a man 'with a gun'.

Firearms officers were called to the east end of Newcastle on Thursday afternoon after "a report of concern for a man with a suspected handgun " on Wilfred Street.

Northumbria Police say officers were called just before 3.50pm and armed police were involved in the response.

However, following a "extensive search of the area", nobody was found.

Kieran Robison, from Walker , was on Brinkburn Street when he witnessed the police activity.

He said: "I heard a helicopter first. I was directly below it just by the East End Pool.

"All I saw was armed response around the streets.

"The helicopter went towards Morrison's circling there with its lights then it went near the town.

"The officers had their guns on and helmets."

The 14-year-old added: "I would say the helicopter was up for about 30 to 40 minutes.

"There were lots of police, dogs and vans."

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "We do not believe there is a heightened risk to the public.

"Members of the public may see firearms officers in the area as reassurance."

They added that inquiries are ongoing.

After most officers left the scene, a police van remained parked on Wilfred Street.
