Helensburgh tennis star Gordon Reid praises Australian Open organisers

Helensburgh tennis star Gordon Reid has said he was perfectly happy to spend two weeks in a hotel room as he prepares for the Australian Open.

The Vale born 29-year-old, who won last year’s men’s doubles title with Alfie Hewitt, was forced to spend two weeks in a Melbourne hotel room due to strict Covid-19 rules in Australia . However, he insists that only a minority of players have an issue with the rules.

Reid’s comments come after world No.1 Novak Djokovic hit out at the regulations, which he claimed were too strict – whilst demanding a private house with gym and tennis court to stay in.

Speaking to BBC Breakfast during his time in isolation, Reid said: “It’s a minority of the players that are kicking up a fuss but the majority of the time that minority are the loudest

“I’ve seen a lot of people complaining about the food but I think it has been ok – I think some people are maybe a little bit spoiled normally.

“You’re a little bit limited about what you can do and players knew the risks before they came.”

After finally taking to the court following the end of his isolation, Reid tweeted: “A good day’s training in the bag. Thank you to the Australian Open organisers for their efforts to provide us safe spaces to train and appropriate equipment. We appreciate it.”

The wheelchair section of the Australian Open starts next Sunday (February 14).
