Helensburgh Tennis Club’s men’s first team gained promotion to the West of Scotland Second Division after a brilliant win away to Bishopbriggs.
All three couples took a while to get used to the blaise surface with first couple Fraser Fulton and David Reid narrowly winning their opening set 7 – 5. They had no problems in the next two sets winning them 6 – 1, 6 – 2.
At second couple Alan MacBeath and Stephen Lewis had a marathon match taking the opening set 6 – 4 and sets 2 and 3 going all the way to the tie break. In the second set the boys were behind 1 – 4 but they fought back to take it 7 – 5.
The tie break was going with serve until, at match point, the Bishopbriggs first serve went wide just missing the tramline and their second serve hit the net gifting the match to the Helensburgh pair.
At third couple David McCowan and Cameron White took the whole first set to get used to the courts losing it 0 – 6. However, they took the second set 6 – 4.
They stormed to a 5 – 3 lead in the third set and at match point Cameron hit a certain winner only for a ball from court two to come on to the court forcing a let.
They went 0 - 4 down forcing a tie break, only to win the next 6 points and hold match points again. Bishopbriggs dug deep and saved the match points and at 9 – 8 Helensburgh finally took the set with a stunning lob from David.
