Helensburgh First Aid on the lookout for volunteers to help events run

A first aid group are on the lookout for new members to ensure that community events throughout Dumbarton and the Vale can continue to run.

Helensburgh First Aid was founded by Keith Shipman after he retired from the police.

With demand for their services set to increase in the year ahead, Keith is now looking for new volunteers to help out and learn life-saving skills.

He told the Lennox: “A couple of years ago the Red Cross decided not to do smaller events and Helensburgh First Aid was set up for events locally where first aid was required, like fireworks and other community events.

“Now they are scaling back their operation even further and groups like ourselves will be needed to cover larger events locally.”

And Keith highlighted the positive impact learning first aid skills can have.

He said: “Apart from giving you personal skills for your own life and looking after your family, it gives you a lot of confidence and helps vital community events happen.

“Without people helping out as first aiders these events simply couldn’t
run.

“We also have people who have progressed onto careers in the healthcare industry.

“One is in the ambulance service, one is in second year of medical school and another has just applied to join the ambulance service.

“I think a lot of people come along and maybe realise that they enjoy working with the public, and helping them as and when it’s needed.”
