Helensburgh drag star congratulated by Nicola Sturgeon on Young Scot award

Helensburgh drag star Lawrence Chaney was sent a letter of congratulations by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, after scooping a Young Scot Award.

The former Hermitage Academy pupil, 24, took home the entertainment award alongside fellow Scottish queen Ellie Diamond - after starring on BBC series RuPaul’s Drag Race.

And Lawrence also earned praise from the First Minister for being an inspiring role model for young people.

In a letter to both Chaney and Diamond, the FM said: “It is with great pleasure that I write to congratulate you both on winning the Young Scot Entertainment Award 2021.

“Being the first Scottish competitors chosen to appear on RuPaul’s Drag Race UK is an outstanding achievement and you should feel extremely proud.

“By speaking openly on the show about your experiences of growing up gay, I am sure you will have inspired so many young people to be true to themselves.”
