Helena Christensen says Michael Hutchence's brain damage set him on suicidal course

INXS frontman Michael Hutchence was just 37 when he took his own life in a Sydney hotel room after devouring a cocktail of drink and drugs in 1997.

And his ex, Helena Christensen, 50, believes the stage for his suicide was set five years before when the rocker sustained serious brain damage and refused medical help.

Michael suffered brain damage and a broken skull when a taxi driver punched him to the floor for refusing to get out of his way in Helena's native Denmark.

And instead of staying in hospital, he fought against emergency doctors as they tried to save him.

“He was unconscious and there was blood coming out of his mouth and ear. I thought he was dead," she reveals in new documentary Mystify: Michael Hutchence.

“We got to the hospital and he woke up and was aggressive. They were trying to make him stay but he was physically pushing them away.”

Describing how his personality changed, the model told how Michael became "dark and angry", lost his sense of taste and smell and spent an entire month "throwing up blood and pushing away all food”.

He later left Helena in 1995 for married mother-of-three, Paul Yates, who divorced her own husband, Bob Geldof, to embark on a passionate, drug-fuelled relationship with the Australian star.

On the night before Michael's death at the Ritz-Carlton in Double Bay, Sydney, he fought with Bob after the latter took legal action to stop Paula taking the kids to see him.

In tears after a series of acrimonious calls, he telephone former girlfriend Michele Bennett at 9.54am and said he needed to see her.

But when she arrived at 10:40am there was no answer, and an hour later, a maid found his body in a kneeling position facing the door of his hotel room.

The coroner ruled Michael took his own life whilst depressed and under the influence of other drugs, although Paula would later suggest it was a sex game gone wrong.

She was found dead at her London home in 2000 from a heroin overdose.
