Helena Christensen breaks silence on Michael Hutchence and his downward spiral

Helena Christensen has broken two decades of silence on her ex Michael Hutchence.

The supermodel, who Hutchence dated for four years following his split from popstar Kylie Minogue, spoke out on the late INXS rocker for the first time in new documentary, Mystify: Michael Hutchence.

Candidly opening up on her relationship with the heart-throb, she told how, at first, he was her "perfect match" and seemed "joyful, sweet, deep and emotional".

"[It was] total mental and physical chemistry," she said.

However, it was after his 1992 brain injury that it all went wrong, according to the Danish model.

The injury came about as a result of an assault by a taxi driver, which caused Hutchence to hit his head on a curb.

"He [Hutchence] was unconscious and there was blood coming out of his mouth and ear," Christensen recalled. "I thought he was dead."

But the model added that while he survived, his personality became altered as a result of the inclident.

The singer's injuries meant that he lost his sense of smell – but far worse, he also developed a "dark and very angry side" of himself.

"We got to the hospital and he woke up and was aggressive," she said.

"They were trying to make him stay but he was physically pushing them away."

While Christensen tried to comfort him, Hutchence was reportedly adamant that he wasn't going back to see a doctor.

Michael Hutchence's sister claims 'Paula Yates wasn't enough for him' and he planned to leave her before his death

Desperate to take care of the troubled star herself, she told of how she would bring him food, and he "almost got violent" as he pushed the plates away.

"When I have children, I will never be able to smell my baby," he is said to have emotionally told her.

While Christensen tried to support her boyfriend through the horrible time, even his bandmates conceded that he was in a concerning headspace.

In the documentary, they noted how they had watched him smashing up a vintage guitar "for fun".

"Something drastic happened. I was deeply sad, confused and bewildered, but at the same time it couldn’t have continued that way," Christensen confessed.

As his mood swings continued, the pair eventually broke up, and he went on to date Paula Yates.

The musician was found dead in his Sydney hotel room in 1997, with an inquest confirming he hung himself.

However, Yates has always insisted disagreed with the verdict, and insisted that his death was a "sex game gone wrong".
