Helen Skelton has opened up about the funny, and sometimes painfully honest, side of parenting, recalling a moment with her son that left him completely embarrassed. The TV presenter, 41, is mum to Ernie, nine, Louis, eight, and four-year-old Elsie, whom she shares with her ex-husband Richie Myler.
In a candid chat on The Runna podcast, Helen spoke about the emotional ups and downs of raising kids, especially post-divorce, and made a touching – if slightly sad – confession. “This is really sad but when you have kids, you just really want them to like you,” she admitted. “It’s a weird thing, but you’re like: ‘I love you so much, just like me.’”
She didn’t hold back in sharing how brutal kids can be, even with the best intentions. “My kids are at that age where sometimes they look at me and they’re like, you are a [bleep],” she added with a laugh, according to Entertainment Daily.
One moment in particular stood out for her recently – the school run. Helen, known for being active and sporty, revealed she often scoots to school with her kids. But not everyone is a fan. “Literally, my eldest went to me the other day: ‘I think you need to leave the scooter now, Mum,’” she shared. Classic parent embarrassment – even when you’re a TV star.
But for Helen, staying active isn’t just about fitness. It’s about setting an example. She’s taken on countless physical challenges over the years and hopes her kids can see the value in hard work. “It’s funny, I don’t do it so that they go: ‘Oh, my mum is a legend,’” she said. “But in the moments when I’m not listening and they say to their mates: ‘My mum did that’ – oh my god I flipping love it.”
She admits it might sound a bit “sad and needy,” but there’s real honesty in her words. “There is definitely that thing of I can’t tell you to stick at this, if I don’t practise what I preach,” she said.
Outside of her podcast reflections, Helen recently turned heads at a glitzy awards do with Gethin Jones, sparking a flurry of unconfirmed romance rumours. The pair looked sharp, with Helen in a sleek black and white gown and Gethin in a classic tux. Snapped together in a hotel hallway and lift, the photos caused a bit of a stir once they hit Instagram, and fans were quick to speculate.
But for now, Helen’s focus seems firmly on family, fitness, and navigating life’s parenting highs and lows – scooter blunders and all.
