Helen Skelton says if you worry about vile trolls then 'you will never live'

Helen Skelton has spoken about how she has learned to deal with vile trolls who have left disparaging comments on her social media in recent months.

The 37-year-old former Blue Peter presenter has been sharing on social media how her and her family have been making the most of the sunshine in the final weeks before restrictions are lifted.

Of course there are always those who bring the negativity but Helen has a simple way of dealing with them.

Speaking to The Mirror, Helen said: "I don't worry about stuff like that. When you are in the public eye, you cannot worry about what people have to say."

She added: "I worry about what my husband thinks, what my kids think and what my parents think but beyond that, you just have to try and conduct yourself in a way that means that you can walk with your head high.

"If you worry about what other people think, you would never do anything."

Speaking about the impending lifting of restrictions, Helen said that it is not something she feels will particularly affect her but that could change.

She said: "Freedom Day is actually my birthday but any of my friends will tell you, I am not someone to make plans and if we have learnt anything over the past 18 months or so and that's being ready to change and adapt.

"If the numbers change or the advice is different, you just have to roll with it.

"I think it is a case of just taking it one day at a time."

What has pleased Helen is the seeming surge in interest in the countryside and all things rura.

She continued: "All we have had for a long time was being able to go for a walk and I am really glad that people have connected with the natural world around them.

"The Yorkshire Shepherdess and Countryfile bring in millions of viewers and I was brought up with a rural life as my parents had a farm in Cumbria.

"When people show an interest in that way of life, it makes me feel a little bit proud and anyone who is interested in farming and wildlife can only be a good thing."

Helen added: "We are so lucky that we have such a gorgeous little island. I know some people get a bit fed up with the rain but when it rains, it just makes everything greener.

"Without a doubt there is a mental health and wellbeing uplift from being in the countryside.

"Being near nature and being in green spaces has such a huge mental wellbeing boost and it is being proven time and again in studies."

Speaking about her own sensibilities, Helen said she has her own version of being 'hangry', which is when hunger drives a rage inside you.

She said: "I just know that, for me, I am just a nicer person if I have been out for a walk, all my family will tell you that.

"I have always been a walker and a wanderer and I am a nicer person if I have been out in the fresh air and in among trees, so from a personal point of view, I have no doubt that nature helps your state of mind."

Fans of Helen Skelton can get to see her in action at this summer’s ‘5 on the Farm’ Festival in Yorkshire.

Tipped to be the most dog-friendly festival in the UK, the event is taking place at Cannon Hall Farm, home of Channel 5’s This Week on the Farm series.

The festival takes place over August bank holiday - August 28 to 30 - and to find out more and book tickets go to: www.5onthefarm.com.
