Sources are now firing back at recent claims Tom Hardy was axed from MobLand, saying he “was not fired” after rumours of a clash with co-stars Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan.
The drama kicked off last week, when Hardy was dogged by headlines reporting that he’d been dropped ahead of filming for the upcoming third season of the Paramount+ mobster series due to tensions over his tardiness on set.
Insiders told The Hollywood Reporter that, during filming for season two of MobLand, Hardy “kept the cast waiting” by staying in his trailer during shoots. “It’s a power play,” the source claimed. “Keeping Pierce, Helen and others waiting is career suicide, I would wager.”
A separate report by Puck News claimed Hardy also had disagreements with MobLand creator Ronan Bennett and executive producer Jez Butterworth over script notes and changes to his lines of dialogue.
All of it culminated in speculation Hardy’s role in season three was “in limbo” as MobLand awaited its season three greenlight, but insiders have now poured cold water on the reports.
“Tom was not fired, the door is not closed for season three, and things are being worked through creatively,” a source close to production told Variety.
The production insider claimed that while the tensions between the acting trio were real during season two, Hardy was never officially let go and is instead focussing on working through the creative differences. “He’s difficult, but he’s a movie star,” the source said.
“He’s used to dealing with some of the best directors in the world. So when he suddenly has a TV director, he struggles and to a certain extent. He can walk all over them because they’re intimidated by him,” they added.
The source also shut down an online tangent of the drama that erupted when fans claimed Mirren ordered Hardy’s firing because of his pro-Palestine stance. “I’ve never heard of anything political. I think that’s probably wildly unhelpful and untrue,” the source said.
“Helen is not that sort of person. If she had a problem with Tom, she would have said it to his face. She’s not the sort of person who’s going to get involved in a whole political situation,” they added.
The supposed disagreements between the co-stars were purely professional, with the insider claiming Mirren was “frustrated when [she] was made to wait a couple of hours” but that she was “never anti-Tom”.
“She certainly isn’t going to be one who stamps her feet and says, ‘Well I’m not coming back if he’s in it’. It’s just not her,” they said.
Mirren took to Instagram this morning to make her stance on the matter clear, sharing a picture of Hardy with the caption, “Love you now and always, Helen.”
Season three of MobLand has yet to be greenlit, but if it gets the go-ahead, filming will reportedly begin in September.
