Double Olympic champion Helen Glover is backing Team GB bosses to make the right call over participation in Tokyo.
Sixty five days out from the Games a coronavirus state of emergency has been extended in the capital as cases continue to rise and the vaccination programme struggles to get out of first gear.
Over 80 per cent of Japanese people want the event cancelled and a doctors union has told the government it is "impossible" to hold the Games given the development of the pandemic.
Amid that uncertainty Glover is working to deliver one of the great sporting comeback stories of the summer.
The mum of three, who stepped away from elite rowing after Rio to start a family, is set to become the first woman to make a British Olympic rowing team post-childbirth.
Glover said: ”There will always be concerns going into any championships, especially Olympic Games, in Rio it was Zika and a lake we were told was contaminated with raw sewage.
"But clearly this concern is very unique and holds a lot more weight than any other in history.
“There are hard decisions to be made and as athletes we have to have confidence that the right decisions will be made on our behalf.

“I have 100 per cent confidence in Team GB’s judgement and would absolutely respect any decision they make because I know it would be for the right reasons.”
Glover, 34, marked her comeback by teaming up with Polly Swann to win European Championship gold in Italy last month.
Not only did it extend her unbeaten Championship record, which stretches back to 2012, it confirmed her belief that she could combine an Olympic bid with bringing up two-year-old son Logan and one-year-old twins Bo and Kit.

But while she has control of the controllables she accepts Covid is a law unto itself and so is focused on ensuring she can cope with whatever fate lies ahead.
“With any uncertainty you have to look at what you’re doing day to day and say ‘hey, if it’s taken away from me tomorrow, am I enjoying where I am right now?’” said Glover, a Whole Earth peanut butter Team GB ambassador.
“The answer to that is yes, I’m really enjoying the process. So, to be honest, that takes away any worry about what the future may hold.”
