Helen Flanagan hits out as I'm A Celebrity fans accuse her of 'faking' her fears

Helen Flanagan struggled with her first trial on I'm A Celebrity...South Africa on Monday and despite some viewers accusing her of "faking" her fears, the former Coronation Street star defended her frightened persona.

Taking to Instagram, Helen shared a clip of her watching the trial alongside her daughter Matilda, seven and said: "Mummy was so scared. I did it because I didn't want you to say, 'Oh mummy didn't do it.'

"But honestly darling I was absolutely scared – I didn't faint but I did it because I knew Matilda would want to watch me do this. I did it but I really didn't want to."

The soap actress captioned the clip: "I absolutely hate heights."

On Monday, Helen was overwhelmed and admitted she "felt sick" as she watched Fatima Whitbread jump across giant balls while suspended above them in a safety harness.

The soap actress and mum-of-three, who first took part in 2012, crouched on the floor as she watched Fatima fall.

"I need to get this helmet off...it's horrible," she told Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly.

Helen walked over to the nearby medic and had her helmet removed while her campmate and cricketing legend Phil Burrell, asked: "Where's she gone?"

"I'm sorry Phil, at the moment I'm the worst campmate," Helen told him. "I think everything is in the mind. I am going to try and keep myself calm. I don't like heights, that's the thing. They make me feel sick."

Helen attempted the challenge but struggled to complete the task and overcome her fear of heights.

Some viewers hit out at the former Coronation Street star and accused of playing up to the cameras.

One I'm A Celebrity fan tweeted: "Episode 1 and Helen is already getting on my nerves."

"Helen hasn't changed at all then," another wrote, while a third agreed: "Helen is 100% going to chicken out of the trails and it's only day one hahahaha."

Someone else shared: "Ugh this series is just going to be Helen sh***ing herself and not doing the tasks," and another added: "She knew exactly what she was signing up for so what's with all the dramatics."

I'm A Celebrity...South Africa airs on ITV on weekdays at 9pm.
