Heinz boss issues baked beans and ketchup warning

The boss of Heinz has warned shoppers they should expect to see soaring food prices.

Miguel Patricio said the firm has been forced to "raise prices, where necessary, around the world" of products including ketchup and baked beans.

The Heinz chief explained the price hike is due to a number of supply issues as the world emerges from the pandemic.

He told the BBC : "Specifically in the UK, with the lack of truck drivers.

"In (the) US, logistic costs also increased substantially, and there's a shortage of labour in certain areas of the economy."

The Heinz chief said the price hikes are a part of a trend as a result of the the world's rising population and a lack of land to grow produce.

However, Mr Patricio claimed it's up to the food industry to shoulder the responsibility to help reduce the impact of the shortages.

He said: "I think it's up to us and to the industry and to the other companies to try to minimise these price increases."

The warning comes amid fears over supply chain issues ahead of Christmas.

Business advisory firm BDO LLP said its research suggested that economic growth had slowed for five months in a row due to disruption.
