Heinicke, Washington come up short 20-16

Taylor Heinicke’s first-down pass from the 20-yard line was intercepted by Rodney McLeod in the end zone ending Washington’s scoring threat and Washington fell to Philadelphia 20-16.

Following a Jake Elliott 41-yard field goal with 2:21 remaining, which extended the Eagles’ lead to 20-16. Washington had started on their own 25 and had driven 55 yards in ten plays. On the previous play, Washington faced a 3rd & 5 from the Philadelphia 30, when Heinicke connected with Jaret Patterson, who gained ten yards to the Eagles’ 20-yard line.

At the conclusion of the completion to Patterson, Washington called their final timeout with 30 seconds remaining.

Heinicke was looking down the middle for tight end John Bates. As Bates began to reach for the pass, contact was made and Bates was unable to make a play on the ball, no interference was called, and McLeod’s diving interception was upheld via instant replay.

When Patterson scored from 11 yards and Joey Slye connected on a 31-yard field goal, Washington led Philadelphia 10-0 for the second time this season. Slye’s 55-yard field goal with one remaining in the first half, Washington led 16-7.

However, the Eagles (as they did in the first game) took the second-half kickoff driving 75 yards in 14 plays, scoring on a fourth & 1 Boston Scott run, narrowing the Washington lead to 16-14.

The Washington offense bogged down, not scoring the entire second half, while the Eagles who had gained 40 fewer yards than Washington in the first half, out-gained Washington in the second half by 58 yards.
