Ford's Andre Heimgartner has pulled off a surprise to secure pole position for Saturday's Supercars race at The Bend Motorsport Park.
The Kelly Grove Racing driver clocked the fastest lap of two minutes and 07.8560 seconds in wet conditions at the South Australian circuit to secure just the second pole position of his career.
It's a dramatic reversal of fortune for the 28-year-old New Zealander, who had a round to forget at Symmons Plains in Tasmania last month.
"At Symmons Plains I was getting dropped by the pack so I must have forgotten how to drive and now I've remembered overnight," Heimgartner told Fox Sports.
"It's good. It's just a testament to the guys. We had that horrible round last round and they've turned around and the car's fast, so can't wait to get stuck into the racing."
Holden's Chaz Mostert, the only non-Red Bull Ampol Racing driver to win a race in 2021, qualified second-fastest for Saturday's 24-lap race with a 2:08.0682.
Just behind Heimgartner and Mostert was another surprise package, with Erebus Motorsport's Will Brown set to start from third on the grid after a career-best qualifying effort.
Championship leader Shane Van Gisbergen could only qualify eighth with Red Bull teammate and nearest rival Jamie Whincup just behind him in ninth spot on the grid.
It was a session to forget for Brad Jones Racing, with all four of their cars qualifying in the final four spots on the grid.
Former championship winner Mark Winterbottom will start from 20th after he suffered an issue with his power-steering at the start of the second 10-minute qualifying period.
Saturday's race is set to start at 4.05pm ACST.
