Hegarty's Home Bakery closing its doors after 18 years of serving the community in Dungannon

A popular Co Tyrone bakery is closing its doors for the final time after 18 years in business.

Hegarty's Home Bakery on Market Square in Dungannon posted on social media to announce "we have baked our last cake."

The bakery, which was opened by owner Sean Hegarty in 2003, closed for a holiday on Friday, July 9, however announced on July 23 they would not be reopening on Monday, July 26 as originally planned.

They urged those who have vouchers to come forward for refunds, while explaining that pre-existing orders will be completed.

They noted "current uncertainty around the building" as a reason for its closure, and said thank you to customers who have stuck by them, while paying tribute to the "great town" of Dungannon.

In the post, they said: "It’s with great regret that I must inform all our great customers/friends that the shop won’t be opening again after the holidays. After 18 years and with the current uncertainty around the building I have decided that we won’t be re-opening on Monday.

"I would like to thank you all for your custom over the last two decades. For anyone with a voucher please PM the page and you will be refunded. There are a couple of pre-existing orders, these will be completed and I will be in touch on Monday.

"Thank you to my suppliers and to anyone who has worked with me over the years and most importantly to my family who have always backed me to the hilt.

"Time to spend some time with my family and look forward to the future. Dungannon is a great town, great people, great shops, please continue to support them, especially the independent stores who remain the heart of Dungannon."

The post received a huge response, with over 1,000 reactions on Facebook and upwards of 500 comments expressing sadness at Hegarty's closure.

One commenter said "birthdays will never be the same" without their cakes, while others noted "The Square won't be the same without you."
