A hedgehog has died after allegedly being ‘kicked and stabbed to death’ by a student at a Motherwell school.
The horrific incident is understood to have taken place at Brannock High School in Newarthill on Tuesday, May 18.
Campaign group Motherwell District Wildlife Protection say they were called to rescue the injured critter before rushing it to the vets.
Tragically, the female hog passed away and “suffered terribly” after allegedly sustaining multiple stab wounds, the Daily Record reports.
Sharing a picture of the injured critter, they said: “Just picked this wee hedgehog up from a local high school where kids thought it would be a good idea to kick it about and stab it.
“It's now in a local vet. Don't know the sex, if it's female we need to look for any young. Police and SSPCA are aware."
They later added: “The vet phoned and said she died of multiple stab wounds. All wounds have been photographed. Police are involved and are coming out to see us. The poor thing suffered terribly.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We have received a report of an injured hedgehog being found at Brannock High School on Tuesday, 18 May.
“Enquiries into the incident are at an early stage."
A spokesperson for North Lanarkshire Council added: “We are aware of an alleged incident at the school and will be carrying out an investigation in order to determine the full facts.”
The Scottish SPCA has also been contacted for comment.
