Hector Bellerin speaks out on abortion bill in inspirational message

Arsenal star Hector Bellerin has been praised after posting an inspirational message on social media speaking out on Alabama's controversial abortion bill.

A number of US states have recently passed new restrictions on abortions, including a near-total ban in the state of Alabama this week.

It has sparked a worldwide debate regarding the topic, with the changes widely condemned.

Spanish right-back Bellerin has now called out the football world for its silence on the issue and urged men to stop "hiding away" from the issue in a tweet which has gained a significant response.

Bellerin wrote: I wanted to see if anyone from our industry would speak out about the abortion bill, but I guess people are too scared.

"This isn't just an issue for women, it's one for every human being.

"We fight for equality and this is something men should fight for and not hide away from."

The tweet has been liked by over 100,000 users and received over 27,5000 retweets with the 24-year-old being praised for his wise words.

He has been branded an "example on and off the pitch" with others adding that "hopefully this will also be an example that also other footballers will follow".

Another fan wrote: "Crucial on the pitch & a true role model off it. When others would much rather stay quiet about pressing issues, you consistently draw attention to the environment, discrimination, charity work, the importance of being yourself & now this. You’re a true credit to the club!"

In a video released by Arsenal last year, Bellerin spoke about footballers having a responsibility to use their influence in a positive fashion.

He said: "I think as footballers, we have a massive platform that we should use way more than we actually are."

The full-back has been sidelined since rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament against Chelsea in January, but he is progressing well with his recovery as he eyes a return next season.
