The Houston Astros are just over a week into spring training, and they’re already experiencing the kind of treatment from fans that they should count on for the regular season.
It’s even happening at their own spring training facility.
Video recently hit Twitter of a heckling incident from the Astros’ Grapefruit League game against the Nationals last week, which was ultimately postponed after a 93-minute rain delay. The video showed a fan standing alongside the Astros’ dugout during the stoppage, and we could hear this fan asking the Astros if they were going to give the World Series trophy back after the cheating scandal.
After repeating the question several times, this fan got someone with the Astros to bite. A voice shouted back, “As long as you keep paying to come see us … Just keep paying to come see us.”
If fans are willing to stand out in the pouring rain to taunt the Astros during spring training, you can almost guarantee that matters won’t get any better for games that actually count.
It’s not going to be a fun season for Houston.
