Hebburn Town and Consett await FA Vase decision amid coronavirus fears

Consett and Hebburn Town are awaiting news on whether their FA Vase semi-final ties will go ahead over the next fortnight.

The Football Association are set to meet on Monday to discuss the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and one of the topics up for debate is how to handle the remaining ties in their national cup competitions.

Consett are set to travel to Gloucestershire on Friday afternoon as they finalise preparations for the first leg of their semi-final against Western League club Bitton.

And Hebburn will head to Kent next weekend when they face Southern Counties East League Premier Division club Corinthian.

Both North East clubs are set to host the second legs of their respective ties on Saturday week as they look to secure a first ever appearance at Wembley – but all plans are currently on hold as they await the outcome of the FA’s meeting on Monday.

The Northern League have postponed their scheduled fixtures until the first Saturday of April, but, as the Vase is a national competition under the Football Association’s jurisdiction, the decision to postpone or go ahead with the ties will lie with the governing body.

Consett chairman Frank Bell told ChronicleLive: “I hope that the people that make the decisions know enough about what is going on.

“We have people in shopping centres, kids at schools and the guidelines from the government is that sporting events can go ahead.

“Steps one to four are still playing football and there is still a lot of steps five and six football going ahead.

“I don’t really know enough about the subject, but people’s lives and their families are more important.

“I hope the decision is made on facts, rather than just on hearsay.

“I am sure that they Football Association will take everything into account and come to a safe and correct conclusion.”
