Heavy Turnout in Oman Shura Council Elections

Omanis flocked to Shura Council elections on Sunday amid hopes that new members would be voted to the body and introduce changes that would ease the people’s economic concerns.

Some 637 candidates, including 40 women were running for the 86-member council. People voted at 110 electronic polling stations. Voting ended at 9 pm.

In the Bawshar province, a woman told Asharq Al-Awsat that she supports the participation of women in elections.

“I will vote for my candidate for women to be represented in the Shura Council,” she added.

Interior Ministry undersecretary Khaled bin Hilal bin Saud al-Bousaeedi said that the elections took place smoothly and without incident.

Electronic polling has proved its efficiency in previous elections, he added.

The results of Sunday’s vote will be announced as soon as the ballots are counted.
