Heavy snowfall causes gridlock on East Kilbride roads

Drivers in East Kilbride faced challenging road conditions this morning after waking up to heavy snowfall.

Temperatures plummeted to -3 overnight with a yellow weather warning for snow, sleet and ice is still in place across the region as the Met Office predicts snowfall until noon today (Friday).

Residents found several inches of snow on side streets this morning with disruption to school buses, delayed school opening times and problems on some public transport.

Drivers on St Leonards Road and High Common Road faced queues with one driver also describing the A726 East Kilbride to Strathaven road as "a car park".

Problems were also reported in the Kelvin Industrial Estate near to Screwfix with a lorry unable to negotiate a hill.

A local engineer told Lanarkshire Live that there was "no sign of gritting" on some routes.

"It's absolutely treacherous up here this morning, I nearly didn't make it out my street and then when I got to the Bonnie Prince Charlie at St Leonards it was just gridlock," he said.

"Then I got to the Kelvin and had to double back on myself as a lorry was sitting near Screwfix with it's hazards on, it couldn't get up the hill. I've not seen signs of a lot of gritting, it's just a nightmare. If anyone comes to a stop it just causes a tailback."

However, South Lanarkshire Council posted on its social media this morning: "Our gritters have been out over the last 24 hours and overnight and are still working, with extra resources in some areas. Some roads will be difficult until salt gets worked in, so drive carefully."

The Met Office say there could also be a small chance of power cuts occurring and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected and they predict a slight chance that some rural communities could become cut off.

They have also warned people to take care when out and about due to the probability of icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.
