Heavy snow to hit Scotland bringing up to 20 inches as amber warning issued amid week-long weather chaos

An amber weather warning has been issued for Scotland as heavy snow is set to descend over the country later this week.

Up to 20 inches of snow is expected to dump on the country from Friday until 6pm on Saturday amid a week-long spell of weather chaos.

Strathclyde, Grampian, Central Tayside and Fife and Highlands & Eilean Siar will will see the worst of the conditions due to persistent and heavy snow.

It comes the Met Office has issued a weather warning for every day this week until Monday as Scotland braces itself for a bout of wintry weather.

Around 10-15cm will blanket the majority of these areas but the snowfall could rise to as high as 50cm on higher ground.

Scots are being warned the weather conditions could cause blizzards and snow drifts and will likely result in blocked roads, stranded vehicles and power issues.

Drivers are expected to take extra care on roads as the weather is set to cause chaos for commuters on essential journeys.

The Met Office said: "By Friday, snow is expected to become more widespread, persistent and heavy, and will settle at increasingly low levels. The heaviest snowfall should clear later on Saturday.

"Fresh snowfall totals of 10-15 cm is possible at low-levels, with 20-30 cm accumulating above about 150 m. Some high ground exposed to strong easterly winds could see as much as 50 cm building up by Saturday evening.

"However some places close to the east coast may see only small amounts of snow settling.

"The strong easterly winds will likely lead to drifting snow, temporary blizzard conditions, and ice forming on exposed power lines and phone masts."

The new weather warnings come in addition to another six issued until Monday. As much as 20 inches could land on parts of throughout the week.

Beast from the East 2 fears have been ramped up in recent days as forecasters predict “disruptive snowfall” to land in Scotland to continue well into February.
