Heavy snow shuts vaccine centres with schools closed as Storm Darcy sparks chaos

Several Covid vaccination centres in the East of England have been forced to shut because of heavy snow.

A number of schools were closed across the south-east of England and Lincolnshire.

Police this morning warned motorists they should only travel if their journey is essential, with settled snow making roads hazardous.

And the bad weather has hampered the coronavirus vaccination drive, with a number of centres forced to shut, some of them for the second day in a row.

Among them are Clacton Hospital, Colchester United’s stadium, Gainsborough Sports Centre in Ipswich and Chevington Close in Bury St Edmunds.

Monday morning Met Office forecast - Heavy snow showers sweep in

Temperatures could fall to as low as -13C in some areas, with the country feeling the full effects of Storm Darcy.

The Met Office said the 'bitterly cold' weather will be caused by strong easterly winds that have battered the country from Ukraine and the Black Sea.

Forecasters are now warning of the potential for 'widespread travel disruption' as well as a power cuts and service outages.

A slew of weather warnings remain in place today until Wednesday for snow and ice across many eastern parts of the country, and spanning the entire length of Britain.

A number of weather warnings have been put in place, with the UK set to be battered by heavy snow.

The east of England as well as London and the south-east are all affected by the amber warnings of snow until midday, which predict possible widespread travel disruption and power cuts.

A second amber weather warning for snow was issued this morning, and is in place from 6am until 2pm today.

The warning, covering an area between Sheffield, Lincoln and Nottingham, says those in the affected region should expect ‘frequent heavy snow showers’ which will lead to travel disruption.

As much as 15cm of snow could accumulate particularly over the Lincolnshire Wolds.

Various other severe weather warnings for snow and ice, across eastern areas the length of Britain are also in place until Wednesday.

The Met Office said of the treacherous conditions: “Monday will start cold for all.

“Snow will continue to fall in southeast England, with further snow showers elsewhere.”

The AA said the "treacherous driving conditions" led to "numerous" accidents on UK roads on Monday.

Spokesman Ben Sheridan said: "Roads will be lethal where snow and ice has hit the UK.

"If you must travel, reduce your speed to account for the conditions and leave plenty of space behind other vehicles.

"Don't forget to clear snow from the windows, lights and roof of the car so you can see and be seen, and watch out for black ice and compacted snow, especially in rural areas."

Meanwhile, National Rail has told train passengers that services across the country are likely to be affected by the conditions.

The firm said "it may be necessary to close some routes", and urged customers to travel "later in the morning".

Southern Rail announced service cancellations in south-east London, while networks in Kent and Essex have closed train lines.
