According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, there will be very heavy localized rain through Tuesday in the Kyushu region.
Minamata and Ashikita in Kumamoto Prefecture have already seen more rain than the average for all of July. The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a warning against landslides and rivers breaking their banks.
In Kumamoto Prefecture, 250 millimeters of rain was expected to fall in the Kumamoto and Aso areas, and 220 millimeters in the Amakusa, Ashikita and Kuma areas in the 24 hours to 6 a.m. Tuesday, according to the agency.
By noon Tuesday, 250 millimeters of rain was expected to fall in Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki and Oita prefectures; 150 millimeters in Yamaguchi and Kagoshima prefectures; and 120 millimeters in Miyazaki Prefecture.
Caution should also be exercised outside the Kyushu region.
Heavy rain was expected over a wide area from western Japan to the Tohoku region from Monday to Tuesday.
According to the agency, 300 millimeters of rain was expected to fall on the Pacific side of Shikoku; 250 millimeters in central and southern Kinki, Gifu and Shizuoka prefectures; 200 millimeters in the Koshin region; 180 millimeters in the southern Kanto region; and 100 millimeters in the Sea of Japan side of the Tohoku region in the 24 hours to 6 a.m. Tuesday.
A seasonal rain front was expected to remain near Honshu even after Wednesday.
