Andhra Pradesh: Heavy rain throws life out of gear in Srikakulam district

Incessant rain led to a sharp rise in the water level of the Vamsadhara, Nagavali, and Bahuda rivers in Srikakulam district on Tuesday.

The rivers, which were in spate for the past one week, received huge huge inflows on Tuesday as well thanks to heavy rain in Srikakulam district and catchment areas in neighbouring Odisha.

The Nagavali received 30,000 cusecs of water followed by Bahuda with 20,000 cusecs. Irrigation officials are discharging excess water of the Vamsadhara from Gotta Barrage.

Meanwhile, the heavy downpour has thrown life out of gear in Srikakulam town with breaches occurring at some tanks. Srikakulam Collector Shrikesh B. Lathkar visited Pedapadu and nearby areas to review relief operations, including improvement of the drainage system. Srikakulam town received 58.8 mm rainfall by Tuesday morning. Gara mandal received the highest rainfall of 128.4 mm followed by Polaki with 64.2 mm.

Narasannapeta, Amadalavalasa and other towns and mandal headquarters witnessed heavy rain. Mr. Shrikesh directed officials to be alert for the next few days to prevent untoward incidents due to floods and heavy rain.
