Heavy rain uproots trees, causes traffic jam on NH

Special Correspondent

KOCHI

Heavy wind and rain felled trees, blew away roofing sheets and caused power outage and a big traffic jam near the Athani junction on the National Highway around 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

The rain and wind mainly buffeted Angamaly, Parakkadavu, Kunnukara, Nedumbassery, Athani, and Chengamanad areas in the district.

Fire and Rescue Services sources said that units from Aluva, Perumbavoor, and Chalakkudy were removing the felled trees. They said there were no reports of casualties or injuries in the incidents.

The police said traffic through Angamaly was disrupted for about an hour on NH 66.

Some of the worst affected were areas in Chengamanad. According to initial reports, hundreds of nutmeg trees, bunched banana plants, mango and jackfruit trees were hit.

Sources in the Cochin International Airport said the operations were not affected despite the bad weather and heavy winds.
