Heavy rain to batter Scotland over weekend as Storm Alex rips through UK

Residents in parts of Scotland are braced for heavy and persistent rain and strong winds this weekend due to Storm Alex.

An Amber weather warning has been issued by the Met Office for Aberdeenshire, Perth and Kinross, Dundee and Angus from 6pm today and will remain in place until 6am tomorrow.

A separate yellow alert has also been issued which started at 3am this morning and will last until 12pm on Sunday.

This covers areas in Clackmannanshire, Falkirk, Fife, Stirling, Moray, the Scottish Borders. Edinburgh, East and West Lothian, Midlothian and Orkney, as well as those affected by the amber warning.

There is a possibility of potential damage to property, disruption to transport and roads networks and localised flooding.

Met Office forecasters say: "An area of rain is expected to move into Scotland from the east on Saturday morning and persist though to Sunday before clearing westwards.

"This is likely to bring widely 40-70 mm of rain to this area with over 120 mm possible over the high ground."

Storm Alex, which has been ripping through France for the past couple of days, is set to bring gale force winds of up to 90mph across England and Wales, with weather warnings issued for much of the country.

Transport Scotland's trunk road maintenace arm will have flood patrols on standby on the A1 and A68 throughout Saturday.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) has issued 11 flood alerts across Scotland.
