Heavy rain to batter parts of Scotland during 33-hour drenching as flood warnings issued

Four flood alerts have been issued in Scotland as forecasters warn that 100mm of rain could fall in some parts of the country.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) has handed out alerts to Aberdeenshire, Dundee and Angus, Tayside and Orkney over the course of Friday.

It follows an overnight drenching from heavy rain showers, which fell on most north eastern parts of Scotland during the early hours of Friday morning.

The Met Office says that as much as 100mm of rain could fall on some parts of the country by the time a 33-hour yellow weather warning ends at midday on Saturday.

Rail services between Aberdeen and Inverness have been impacted by the adverse conditions due to flooding on the track at Forres and Elgin.

Network Rail say that underwater dive teams will be onsite today to carry out a full inspection on the track.

Forecasters have also warned of further disruption to other transport services throughout the day due to spray and flooding on some roads.

A yellow weather warning forecast reads: “Heavy rain will fall throughout Friday and into Saturday morning across parts of eastern Scotland with accumulations of around 40-60mm, but with the potential for 100mm over high ground.”
