Heavy rain storm to smash Leeds as flood warning issued in Yorkshire

Leeds is set for heavy rain this week as a flood warning is issued in Yorkshire.

A flood alert has been issued by the Environment Agency for the Humber estuary from Spurn Point to Winestead Outfall, while weather forecasts by the Met Office predict a lashing of heavy rain for Leeds.

A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said: "The flood alert for the Humber estuary from Spurn Point to Winestead Outfall has been issued for tomorrow morning's tide, Monday 12th September 2022, between 6.30am and 9.30am. A high spring tide and onshore winds are likely to cause overtopping waves and spray along the coast.

"The particular area at risk is Southfield farm. Please be careful along beaches, coastal and estuary footpaths and roads in the area, as large waves and sea spray can be dangerous. We will continue to monitor the forecast closely."

Although the flood warning is not specifically for Leeds, persistent rain throughout the day and into the evening will be a cause for concern. Most areas in Leeds have received lots of rain today.

And the rain is expected to continue into the night, early mornings and only subside around 8am. ]

But later in the day, there will be another period of heavy rain between 3pm and 6pm.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "Cloudy evening, with rain soon spreading east, and turning heavy at times after dusk.

"Drier intervals are likely, especially after midnight, while some southeastern parts of Humberside could perhaps remain dry throughout. Some hill fog also likely across the Pennines. Minimum temperature 14 °C."

The rain is expected to continue on Monday. The Met Office said: "Cloudy for much of the day, with further outbreaks of rain and drizzle, and the odd heavier burst. Some drier intervals are likely, however, perhaps allowing very brief brighter spells. Maximum temperature 22 °C."

The rain is expected to fill river levels to the brink. An interactive map on the Environment Agency's website shows river levels in Leeds as full, and although a flood warning is not in place for Leeds specifically as yet.
