Heavy rain in Kerala till Tuesday: IMD

KOCHI: IMD issued a very heavy rainfall warning for several districts till Nov 16 while forecasting widespread rain across Kerala. A fresh lowpressure area is expected to form over south Andaman Sea by Saturday and move in a west-northwest direction.

IMD said that a severe convection in the next three days, because of strong Westerlies, will bring heavy rain in south Kerala.

An orange alert was issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam and Idukki on Saturday. The remaining districts are on alert for heavy rain (7-11cm). On Sunday, orange alert was issued for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Idukki with yellow alerts for other districts.

As strong winds are likely over Kerala coast and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea; fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea. Overall rainfall is likely to be above normal in south Peninsular India, including south and interior parts of TN, Kerala and Mahe, Karnataka and most parts of south Maharashtra.

According to the 24-hour rainfall recorded on Friday, Idukki 14cm, followed by Thodupuzha/Perumkadavila (11cm each). Neyyattinkara, Peermade and Aluva got 7cm each. Minimum temperature rose appreciably in Alappuzha while no large change was recorded elsewhere. Punalur recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 21 degrees.
