SVG misses shootout in Supercars

Defending Supercars champion Shane Van Gisbergen has paid the price for a mishap in qualifying and will start Sunday's race from a lowly 21st.

The Red Bull Ampol Racing star, who won Saturday's season-opening race at Sydney Motorsport Park, ran off the track on his flying lap in the 15-minute session.

With heavy overnight rain making for treacherous damp conditions, Van Gisbergen's Holden dipped out into the wet grass, costing him any chance of setting a good lap time.

Bathurst champion Chaz Mostert qualified fastest for Sunday's top 10 shootout for pole position, clocking a one minute and 35.3775 seconds lap.

Shell V-Power Racing's Anton De Pasquale, who won pole position for Saturday's race, was second with a 1:35.6861 lap.

Van Gisbergen's teenage teammate Broc Feeney qualified for the shootout with the fourth-quickest lap of the session.

Cameron Waters, Brodie Kostecki, Todd Hazlewood, Bryce Fullwood, Will Davison, Mark Winterbottom and James Courtney were the others in the top 10.

Mostert's Walkinshaw Andretti United teammate Nick Percat will start from the back of the grid in 25th after he came off on the final turn and ended the session with his Commodore in a tyre wall.

Bureau of Meteorology statistics from the nearby Horsley Park weather station show 80mm of rain fell overnight in the region with social media footage showing ankle deep water across the track when teams arrived.

Despite the wet weather Sunday's 77-lap race is still scheduled to start at 2.30pm.
