Heavy rain and winds of up to 45mph batter Greater Manchester on Tuesday after Storm Brendan swept across the region

Greater Manchester has been warned to expect more stormy weather on Tuesday after heavy rain and powerful gusts battered the region this evening.

Storm Brendan swept its way across the UK on Monday leading to heavy and strong winds in many areas.

The worst hit region was Northern Ireland and the north west of Scotland where winds of up to 80mph brought trees and power lines and down, saw flights and trains cancelled and left homes without power.

The effects were a lot less prevalent further south. However the north west of England including Greater Manchester still huge deluges of rain and strong winds.

Commuters reported being left soaked through even after just stepping outside for a matter of minutes as the rain which began in the early evening lashed down.

In Oldham the rain was coming down so hard it was setting car alarms off, residents said. - see video above .

Trains to and from Manchester Piccadilly were hit with delays after a trampoline was blown from someone's garden into the air and onto the tracks.

Network Rail said: "Due to a problem with electric supply services via Stafford may be subject to delay or diversion.

"We've found what's causing the problem with the electric supply. We're currently working to remove the trampoline which has been blown onto the track. Thank you for your patience."

There could be some isolated showers tonight but worst of the weather brought by Storm Brendan is set to pass with the weather warnings in place for it expiring at midnight forecasters say.

However a new area of low pressure is set to move in tomorrow meaning we can expect more of the same.

Helen Roberts, Met Office forecaster told the Manchester Evening News that heavy downpours would begin around midday and could hit "at any time" during the day.

Winds could again reach up to 45mph, with a new yellow warning for wind coming into effect at midday and Ms Roberts said people should be prepared for potential transport disruption.

"The advice would be to allow some more time for their journeys" she said.

"There is likely to be a lot of surface and spray on the roads which could make for quite nasty driving conditions.

"And there is the potential for disruption to local transport

"So people should keep an eye on the forecasts and transport updates."
