Heavy rain and wind to batter the North East after Bank Holiday Monday washout

The North East is set to be hit by rain and wind on Tuesday as ferocious gusts batter parts of the UK.

Huge swathes of central and southern England as well as Wales remain in a weather warning zone for wind on Tuesday.

The Met Office says that the worst of the strong winds will continue into the morning as a yellow warning, first put in place on Monday at midday, will remain in force until 9am on Tuesday.

In the North East, temperatures are set to remain low, reaching no higher than around 7C, with gusts of up to 40mph and rain continuing during the day.

Forecasters said people should expect travel chaos in other parts of the UK with delays likely on the roads, rail networks and air transport links, as well as on ferries and buses.

There is also expected to be damage to buildings as well as fallen tree branches, with large waves set to strike coastal regions.

Gusts of up to 65mph are expected to hit some of the affected areas across the UK before the gales begin to subside by the afternoon, reports The Mirror.

Along with the windy weather there will be more heavy rain predicted to lash Britain, a day after relentless downpours struck on a washout Bank Holiday Monday.

A Met Office forecaster said: "As we head into Tuesday we will see the heavy, persistent rain clearing to the east but showers are following behind and it is going to remain windy."

The showers are expected to be heavy at times together with some thunder, as well as sleet and snow in parts of Scotland.

Forecasters said the country will end up in a 'showery regime' and that temperatures will stay low but not as cold as in recent weeks, keeping generally above freezing.

On Tuesday there will be high temperatures of up to 14C in the south by the afternoon.

With the wet weather experts are warning people to be aware of the risk of flooding and the Environment Agency has issued four flood alerts for England, meaning 'be prepared.'
