Heavy rain and thunder causes flooding with sewage problems reported

Heavy rain and floods battered Ilkeston which led to problems with sewage water after thundering showers struck.

The downpours on Sunday evening (June 14) caused surging waters to flow on streets in the town including in Green Lane and Beatty Walk.

This led to issues with sewage getting into the flood water, Severn Trent confirmed.

The water company said it is now investigating.

A Severn Trent Water spokesman told Nottinghamshire Live: "Highways drainage is the responsibility of the local authority so we can’t comment about drains being cleaned or otherwise.

"We’re aware of some issues with sewer flooding due to the storm and we’ve got teams on the ground working through the reports."

Councillor Mike Wallis, lead member for culture and leisure at Erewash Borough Council, said: “Our street cleaning teams are out daily keeping our borough clean and after flash floods it is a particularly busy time. We were made aware of some issues in Ilkeston last night after the flash floods and storm and will be dealing with the cleaning-up.

“In terms of Beatty Walk, we were working with EMH (East Midlands Homes) and Severn Trent last night to help in any way we could and that continues today, including, amongst other things, helping with litter clearance.”

Derbyshire County Council confirmed it was not involved in, or aware of, any evacuations of properties as a result of the floods.

The authority added it is sending a highways inspector out to look at Beatty Walk to see if there is anything they can do to stop it happening again.

In Nottinghamshire, further showers are expected to hit throughout the week, with temperatures staying warm from 18C to 23C.
