Heavy rain and gales to hit Liverpool and Wirral this weekend but sunshine is on the way

Merseyside is set to be hit by heavy rain and gales this weekend, but there is the promise of sunshine next week.

This weekend will see a mixture of sunshine and showers with strong winds forecast at various points on Saturday and Sunday.

Rain and heavy winds are forecast on Friday evening and overnight, with even a small chance of hail falling.

Saturday is currently forecast to be dry with sunny spells, but temperatures will struggle to reach double figures, so remember to take your coat if you're planning on heading out on a walk.

Sunday will start off with heavy rain and a fresh breeze, but the rain is currently forecast to fall away in the afternoon, however the cloud will remain thick.

Next week will see a change in the weather with sunshine and mild temperatures forecast.

Tuesday currently looks to be the best day weather wise with sunny spells and highs of 17 degrees, making it seem like Spring has finally arrived.

The Met Office forecast for the entire North West said: "Friday afternoon will become brighter with spells of sunshine but also showers, turning wintry in places especially at higher levels. A much chillier day with brisk south-westerly winds.

"This evening will see patches of clouds and a few rain showers, wintry over higher ground, becoming isolated overnight as clear spells develop. Breezy.

"Saturday will see a few clouds early and the chance of the odd shower, wintry on higher elevations. Plenty of sunshine is then expected before clouds and winds increase, once again, late in the day.

"Sunday will be wet and windy with rain, that may be heavy at times. Monday will continue windy and will start wet, but rain will diminish through the afternoon.

"Tuesday will continue cloudy with a few showers or spells of light rain. It will not be as windy."
