Heavy police presence guards George Square as special powers to search 'any individual or vehicle' enforced over riots

A heavy police presence is guarding George Square after implementing special powers following a week of chaos.

Pictures from the scene today show a number of vans and other police vehicles lining the square.

Glasgow city centre has been the focal point for a spate of ugly clashes during recent protests, with officers called to try and keep the peace.

And now Police Scotland has imposed an order under Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, allowing cops to search any individual or vehicle in the city until 11.59pm tonight.

Yesterday saw Green Brigade football ultras kettled by police in the square as they attended a Glasgow Says No to Racism event.

The left-wing Celtic supporters' group joined hundreds of anti-racism protesters gathered at the demonstration in  Glasgow city centre  despite people being warned by police to stay away due to the coronavirus pandemic.

It followed rioting in the same location on Wednesday, when Loyalists  clashed with pro asylum seeker activists yesterday in the central area.

Violence erupted after a 'protect the Cenotaph' event was held by the National Defence League just before a planned No Evictions Glasgow group demonstration.

And last weekend, counter-protesters gathered to 'protect statues' as Black Lives Matter activists demanded the removal of a memorial to former PM Robert Peel.

The original protest, organised by the  Glasgow Youth Art Collective, was postponed due to what organisers say was a lack of access to the square and "police targeting activists".

But police dressed in riot gear were forced to separate counter-protesters 'protecting statues' from other activists as the groups clashed.

A statement posted by Police Scotland today said: "Following recent protests in #GeorgeSquare, Police Scotland has today imposed an Order under Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994.

"This allows police to search any individual or vehicle within the Greater Glasgow area until 23:59 tonight."
