Strong rain continued to fall in southern Kyushu on Monday as the rainy season front remained stationary. With moist, warm air flowing into the front from the East China Sea, a record 290 millimeters of rain fell in Satsumasendai, Kagoshima Prefecture, in the 12 hours from 9 p.m. Sunday through 9 a.m. Monday.
According to information compiled by The Yomiuri Shimbun, as of 11 a.m. Monday, evacuation advisories had been issued to about 1.07 million people in about 500,000 households in Kagoshima, Kumamoto and Miyazaki prefectures.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, total rainfall in Satsumasendai exceeded 440 millimeters through the early morning Monday.
In Kagoshima, sediment flowed into a house, and a woman in her 70s was taken from the site but she was later confirmed dead.
Meanwhile, some sections of the Kyushu Expressway were closed to traffic.
