Heavy delays on M5 after lorry fuel spillage in Avonmouth

A large fuel spillage has caused 'significant delays 'on the M5 in Avonmouth today (Wednesday, June 24).

Fire crews from across Bristol were called to St Brendan's roundabout earlier today while police also attended and closed the road.

A spokeswoman for Avon Fire and Rescue said: "Crews from Southmead, Avonmouth and Bedminster were mobilised to reports of a fuel spillage.

"On arrival firefighters found a large fuel spillage involving a lorry.

"Firefighters used one high pressure hose reel to clear the spillage."

However, Highways England has said the M5 slip road onto St Brendan's roundabout will remain closed so the section of the road can be resurfaced.

A spokesperson said: "Attempts to clean the carriageway following a large diesel spill have not been successful.

"For the safety of the travelling public, the slip will need to remain closed until the section of road can be resurfaced.

"Due to the slip closure there are significant delays on both the M49 and M5 southbound towards Avonmouth.

"If possible please try to avoid the area or delay your journey and we will keep you updated on the traffic conditions."

The road will now be closed overnight. Traffic must exit the link road via the Portway Roundabout instead.
