Heavily pregnant teenager stabbed to death and dumped in lake

A heavily pregnant teenager has been found stabbed to death and dumped in a lake.

Police had found the body of a woman believed to be between six and nine months pregnant floating in the popular beauty spot of Lake Michigan in the US.

The so-called 'Lake Michigan Jane Doe' has now been identified as 19-year-old Yarianna Wheeler of Chicago.

Investigators discovered 'sharp force' injuries on her body and say her death is being treated as a homicide.

Her official cause of death yet to be determined and a full autopsy will provide more information about how she died.

The announcement came after Ms Wheeler was found floating in the water a week ago where she is believed to have been for a week to 12 days.

She may have entered the water 'anywhere from the northern Indiana shoreline to the northern Illinois shoreline of Lake Michigan,' according to investigators quoted in the New York Post.

A fisherman found her at around 3pm on August 15, according a report in the Lake McHenry Scanner. He then immediately called the authorities.

Police are reported to have received several dozen tip offs and one of them led them to Ms Wheeler.

She who was caught on surveillance footage entering a store on the last known day she was seen alive.

Lieutenant Christopher Covelli of the Lake County Sheriff's Office, told ABC 7: "'When they saw the image, they knew they were on the right track.

"From there, they were able to obtain dental records, which led to her ultimately being identified."

Authorities have now identified the victim the police are asking for the public's help in providing information about a potential suspect.

Just hours after Ms Wheeler's body was discovered, a US Coast Guard helicopter found the body of a man, identified as 49-year-old Martin Mendoza also floating in the lake.

Officials say it appears he drowned, and the two incidents are not related.
