A heavily pregnant cyclist who was injured in a car crash on Monday has lost her baby, police have said.

The woman, aged in her 40s, was hurt in the collision in Aylestone Road, Leicester, and taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary where she remains.

She was injured in a hit-and-run with what was believed to be a white van, police said. The driver was "reported to have left the scene".

Emergency services were called to the scene at about 9.30pm.

Detective Sergeant Paul Hawkins said: “We are continuing to provide support to the woman injured and her family as the investigation continues.”

A 40-year-old man from Leicester was arrested the next day on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and on suspicion of driving while under the influence of drink or drugs.

He has since been released from custody pending further inquiries.

The police have urged anyone with information to make contact. They particularly want anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage from around the time of the incident to get in touch.

Witnesses or those with information are asked to phone 101 and quote incident 630 of 2 December.
